Divorce hits record lows

Despite what nine out of ten of us believe, the divorce rate in America has been falling for decades and is now at its lowest level since the 1950s.

We can’t know how many new marriages today will end in divorce for many decades to come, but based on the data so far, experts put the share at between 40 and 42 percent. The comparable number for marriages launched in the 1970s was about 53 percent.

A perhaps more significant trend to watch is the leveling off – and slight decrease – in the share of children born to unmarried parents. (Married parents are significantly more likely to stay together than unwed parents.) The peak year for unwed motherhood was 2009 at 41 percent of all births. The latest number is 40 percent.

In a similar statistic, the share of children living with married parents hit bottom in 2012 at 64 percent. The latest number is 66 percent. The share of Black children with married parents is far lower, but it has risen much more – from 33 percent in 2012 to 39 percent last year.
