China as the clean, green superpower

China is dominating the world in building an electrified economy based on clean energy technology. It also remains the world’s largest emitter of carbon fumes, but it is turning that corner in ways that are being felt all over the globe.

  • It has already installed a terawatt of solar power – twice as much as the US and Europe combined.
  • It has invested more than $225 billion in clean energy overseas since 2011 – more than the American Marshall Plan that reconstructed post-WWII Europe, adjusted for inflation.
  • Chinese companies made and sold 56.5 percent of all electric vehicles sold globally in the first six months of this year.

The green economy is overtaking the petroleum age. And China, so far, is owning it.
